Surprising Character Details for Tom Cruise’s Next Movie Revealed
Several important details about Tom Cruise‘s next movie have been revealed. Cruise is playing the titular character in Alejandro G. Iñárritu‘s black comedy film Digger. Notably, Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures originally announced the project and Cruise’s involvement in it back in February 2024. The first teaser for the movie and its title were unveiled in December 2025.
Tom Cruise will have extensive prosthetic make-up in Digger
Deadline’s Senior Film Reporter Justin Kroll spoke about Digger during an appearance on the My Mom’s Basement podcast. Kroll compared Cruise’s Digger Rockwell to Les Grossman, the ill-tempered studio executive that the actor played in Tropic Thunder, revealing that the Mission: Impossible star will once more wear prosthetic make-up for the character. Kroll even claimed that the Top Gun actor won’t look like the “movie-star Tom Cruise” in the upcoming film.
When asked if Digger was a straight-up comedy, Kroll stated that it was a “multi-genre” film and compared it to 2014’s Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance), another feature helmed by Iñárritu.
The official logline for Digger reads, “The most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s saviour before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.”
Aside from Cruise, the film’s cast also includes Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Emma D’Arcy, Robert John Burke, Sophie Wilde, Riz Ahmed, Burn Gorman, and Pip Torrens. Iñárritu penned the screenplay with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris Jr., and Nicolás Giacobone.
Earlier this month, Warner Bros. Pictures CEOs Pam Abdy and Mike DeLuca expressed their excitement about Digger. Abdy said that the movie is like “nothing you’ve ever seen.” She added, “That’s what’s so brilliant. This is the fourth time I’ve worked with him (Iñárritu). He never repeats himself, and he’s constantly taking you into his mind and his vision and surprising you. And this movie does exactly that.” Meanwhile, DeLuca called the movie “stunning.”
Digger is scheduled to premiere in theaters on October 2, 2026.
