Why Selena & Hannah Weren’t With Jim Answered by 28 Years Later 2 Director

Nia DaCosta on what happened to Selena & Hannah in 28 Years Later sequel
In 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, director Nia DaCosta reintroduces Cillian Murphy’s Jim. He now lives with his daughter, Sam, at the same Cumbria cottage seen in 28 Days Later.
Selena (Naomie Harris) and Hannah (Megan Burns) are absent, prompting speculation. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, DaCosta stated, “He is definitely a father to a girl named Sam, and all those other questions will be answered in the next film.” She did not reveal the fate of Selena or Hannah.
DaCosta added that she has knowledge of their status, saying, “I know things. I literally cornered Alex [Garland] last night at the premiere. I was like, ‘So what’s going on?’ But I’m really excited about it. That’s all I can say.” The production team shortened Jim’s scene during filming but kept its essential content. In the final cut, he teaches his daughter history and prepares to assist Spike and Kelly as they arrive with Infected in pursuit.
Jim helps without hesitation, mirroring his own past when strangers saved him during the original outbreak. He doesn’t seem to have forgotten that that’s the reason he’s managed to survive. His return continues the theme of human connection and survival central to the franchise.
DaCosta reiterated that the fates of other characters will be addressed in the upcoming third installment. She said, “All those other questions will be answered in the next film.” On the tone of Jim’s reintroduction, DaCosta stated, “He’s giving her tea and toast, as opposed to him machine-gunning down zombies… I thought, ‘Oh, this is what this franchise is doing. Let me honor that.’”
