Peter Jackson Reveals Heartbreaking Reason He Hasn’t Made a New Movie in 12 Years

Peter Jackson is opening up about the heartbreaking reason as to why he hasn’t made a movie in some time.

Jackson is best known for directing the Middle-earth movies, including 2001’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, 2002’s The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and 2003’s The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. He returned to Middle-earth in the 2010s to direct 2012’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, 2013’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and 2014’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

Jackson has helmed a handful of documentaries since then, including They Shall Not Grow Old and The Beatles: Get Back — The Rooftop Concert; however, The Battle of the Five Armies is the last narrative feature film that he’s done.

Why hasn’t Peter Jackson made a movie in 12 years?

The Lord of the Rings movies are now back in theaters for a limited time for the 25th anniversary of The Fellowship of the Ring. In a never-before-seen introduction to Return of the King, via WorldOfReel, Jackson explained that the death of Andrew Lesnie, who passed away in 2015 at the age of 59, is largely the reason why he hasn’t made a movie since The Battle of the Five Armies.

“That was a terrible blow to me, losing Andrew,” Jackson said. “It wasn’t a conscious decision because after that I made a documentary using old footage, and then I made a documentary about The Beatles, using old footage they had shot, and looking back I realize that I’ve avoided doing drama films because I’d have to work with someone else who isn’t Andrew, and I think his death changed my creative path. The result is that for 11 or 12 years, I haven’t made a drama film because that would require me to build a relationship with another DP.”

Jackson did, however, say that he “will” return to directing narrative feature films at some point, and that “day is getting closer,” though he acknowledges that “it’s certainly taken [him a long time to get there.”
