Chris Pratt’s Disappointing Western Is Major Streaming Hit on Netflix

An action western movie featuring Chris Pratt as one of the leads has managed to become a success on streaming, sharply contrasting its underwhelming performance at the time of its theatrical release. The Magnificent Seven, originally released in 2016, has become one of the top-viewed movies on Netflix, ranking quite high on streaming analytics charts.

The Magnificent Seven is a streaming hit on Netflix

Chris Pratt’s The Magnificent Seven is the #7 film on Netflix’s Top 10 movies list on FlixPatrol, as of January 19, 2026.

Accordingly, the film, which holds 154 popularity points as of writing, outranks One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5 (#8, 151 points), The Man in the Iron Mask (#9, 138 points), and Madagascar (#10, 124 points).

However, the film is outranked by the recently released films — The Rip (#1, 925 points) and People We Meet on Vacation (#2, 728 points). It is also outranked by:

  • KPop Demon Hunters (#3, 211 points)
  • How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (#4, 187 points)
  • Accepted (#5, 168 points)
  • Freelance (#6, 161 points)

The Magnificent Seven is a remake of John Sturges’ 1960 film of the same name. Sturges’ movie is, in turn, an adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s iconic 1954 Japanese Samurai film, Seven Samurai.

Following its release, the film became a moderate box office success. It grossed $162.3 million globally against an estimated budget of $90 million (via Box Office Mojo).

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a critical score of 64% and an audience score of 71%. Meanwhile, Metacritic has given the film a Metascore of 54 and a user score of 6.5. The former points to “mixed or average” perception, while the latter denotes “generally favorable” views.

The film’s narrative takes place in the Old West town of Rose Creek. It follows seven gunslingers with contrasting backgrounds and skill sets. A young widow enlists their help to protect Rose Creek from an unscrupulous robber baron and gold mining industrialist.

Antoine Fuqua, who worked on films like Olympus Has Fallen and Southpaw, directed the film. Meanwhile, Nick Pizzolatto and Richard Wenk wrote the screenplay.

In addition to Chris Pratt, the film stars Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, Lee Byung-hun, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Martin Sensmeier, Haley Bennett, and Peter Sarsgaard, among others.
