How to Train Your Dragon 2 Casts Another Actor for Djimon Hounsou’s Villain

The live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 seems to be recasting its main villain. Universal’s upcoming sequel has reportedly found its new Drago Bludvist, replacing the actor who voiced the character in the acclaimed animated film.

Ólafur Darri Ólafsson cast as Drago in live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2

Universal’s live-action follow-up to How to Train Your Dragon is coming together quickly, and one of the biggest updates is the recasting of its central villain. According to Deadline, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will play Drago in How to Train Your Dragon 2, taking over the role as the story transitions from animation to live-action.

Drago Bludvist was first introduced as the main villain in the animated film How to Train Your Dragon 2. He played a ruthless dragon hunter determined to control dragons rather than coexist with them. In the animated version, the character was voiced by Djimon Hounsou, making Ólafsson’s casting a major change for longtime fans.

The upcoming sequel will also follow Hiccup and Toothless as they navigate a rapidly changing world where humans and dragons are no longer at war. The story also explores Hiccup’s connection to his mother, Valka, whose return becomes central as Drago attempts to seize power by force.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 brings back much of the core cast, including Mason Thames, Nico Parker, Gerard Butler, and Julian Dennison. Cate Blanchett has also been confirmed to return as Valka, reprising the role she voiced in the animated films.

Ólafsson, known for roles in Severance and Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue, brings a strong vision to the villain role. With production ramping up and major cast members locked in, How to Train Your Dragon 2 is shaping up to be a highly anticipated continuation of the franchise’s live-action era. After all, the 2025 live-action remake alone grossed $636.4 million globally (via Box Office Mojo).
