Lord of the Rings Trilogy Is a Roaring Success on 25th Anniversary Rerelease
The 25th anniversary rerelease of The Lord of the Rings trilogy brought fans back to theaters in a big way, turning a nostalgia-driven event into a strong box office performer over the weekend.
Lord Of The Rings trilogy made $10.5 million over the weekend after 25th anniversary rerelease
Audiences showed up in force for Peter Jackson’s fantasy epic as all three Lord Of The Rings films returned to the big screen for their 25th anniversary. The rerelease gave a combined global haul of $10.5 million, proving that the journey from the Shire to Mount Doom remains a theatrical draw even decades later.
Domestically, the trilogy earned $9 million through Fathom Entertainment, with overseas markets adding another $1.5 million. What began as a limited engagement quickly expanded after strong fan response, with theater chains adding more showtimes, locations, and full trilogy marathons.
Looking at individual titles, The Fellowship of the Ring led the way with $3.85 million over four days. The Two Towers followed closely, earning $2.64 million after starting showtimes on Saturday, while The Return of the King pulled in $2.5 million from screenings that began Sunday. The films were initially booked across two weekends, with one movie assigned to each day. However, demand quickly changed those plans, pushing exhibitors to extend runs and offer marathon screenings for fans eager to relive the full saga.
Adding to the appeal, Jackson recorded brand-new introductions for each film, giving longtime fans something fresh alongside the familiar story. Select theaters also rolled out limited-edition popcorn buckets themed around the live-action adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels, leaning into the celebratory feel of the rerelease.
The strong performance follows a similar rerelease in 2024, when the trilogy earned $8.2 million domestically over three weekends. Across six live-action films spanning The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, the franchise has now generated more than $5.9 billion worldwide (via Deadline).
