Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers’ ‘Central’ Role in Avengers: Doomsday Explained by Russos
After the Russo Brothers validated countless fan theories about Steve Rogers’ return in Avengers: Doomsday by featuring Chris Evans in the movie’s first teaser trailer, the pair has now shared insight into the character’s role in the project. In a recent discussion, Joe and Anthony Russo talked about the importance of the ex-Captain America to the MCU before divulging how he will fit into the Doomsday plot.
Russo brothers explain Steve Rogers’ role in Avengers: Doomsday
The Russos recently explained that Chris Evans’ character has a significant part to play in the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday and that the story would remain largely incomplete without his contributions.
“His central role to the Avengers and the larger narrative of what the MCU has been something that is very personal to us. We can’t see this narrative without his central role in it,” said the filmmaking duo while speaking with Empire Magazine.
Notably, Evans officially exited the MCU following the events of Avengers: Endgame, aside from a brief cameo as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine.
The 2019 conclusion to the Infinity Saga sees Evans’ Steve Rogers embark on a journey to the past to return all the stolen stones to their respective place in time and space. He ultimately chooses not to return to the present and instead settles with his long-term love interest, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell).
Now, in the foremost teaser trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel fans get to witness Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers for the first time in over six years, officially announcing his return. The brief snippet sees him leading a peaceful life, riding his motorcycle home, restoring his Captain America costume from a box, and tending to his newborn with nothing but compassion in his eyes.
Considering the Russo brothers’ latest statement, it is probable that Evans’ character will end up losing his long-sought-after way of life due to the antics of Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. Other than that, not much is known regarding the plot of the upcoming Marvel sequel.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Doomsday is currently on track to hit theaters on December 18, 2026.
