Clayface Trailer Release Date Gets Disappointing Update
DC Studios fans eagerly awaiting a trailer for the upcoming horror-themed film Clayface will need to temper their expectations. A recent social media update from DC Studios’ co-CEO James Gunn has poured cold water on hopes for an imminent first look.
James Gunn responds to Clayface trailer question
In a series of updates on Threads, James Gunn directly addressed fan anticipation for a Clayface trailer. When asked if a preview would be released within the next couple of months, Gunn offered a definitive reply on January 18, 2026: “No. I haven’t even seen the film yet because James is still in the first cut.”
That exchange sparked further questions about the movie’s progress. So Gunn also took the opportunity to explain why he hasn’t seen the film. He shared how the post-production process works when he is not directing the film himself, like Clayface.
Asked if he tends to stay hands-off during that stage, he replied, “Producers are always hands off during the director’s cut. Not only is it the best way to do it, but it’s also a DGA thing.” When pressed further about whether he watches an assembly cut, Gunn added, “No. Directors always get their first cut which takes place over 11 or 12 weeks or something like that. And then producers see it.”
Despite the Clayface trailer delay, Gunn reassured fans that the film’s scheduled release remains unchanged. When questioned if the film was still on track for its September 11, 2026, debut, he simply answered, “Totally.”
This update aligns with Gunn’s previously stated vision for a stylistically diverse DC Universe. In a July 2025 interview with CBS Mornings, he highlighted Clayface as a prime example, calling it a “complete horror film” within the same universe but offering a totally different experience from a film like Superman.
While the wait for the first look continues, Clayface appears to be progressing normally behind the scenes.
