Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com gave it a 3/4, writing, “It’s a testament to Joe Carnahan’s direction that there’s not a false note in this talented ensemble.” John Nugent of Empire awarded it 4/5, calling it “a gripping, zig-zaggy potboiler.”
David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter stated, “An ace cast led by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck and twisty plotting that bristles with paranoia and mistrust make it an entertaining watch.” Peter Travers from The Travers Take gave it 2.5/4, saying, “It’s the Mattfleck starshine, plus the indisputable action bonafides of director Joe Carnahan, that sell this cop thriller when formula threatens to overtake it.”
Bob Strauss of the San Francisco Chronicle rated it 2.5/4, noting “genre-appropriate flourishes such as Clinton Shorter’s synth-pulse score.” Kevin Maher of The Times (UK) scored it 4/5, summarizing, “The job is done. The perps are punished. The guns holstered.”
Barry Hertz from Globe and Mail described it as “a corrupt-cop drama that is mostly aware about its B-minus-movie aspirations.” David Ehrlich of IndieWire graded it B-, calling it “grounded by the emotional credibility of the relationship between its two leading men.”
Jake Coyle (Associated Press) gave it 2/4, calling the plot “not particularly plausible.” Clarisse Loughrey of Independent gave it 2/5. She said it suffers from “the Netflix curse of dialogue written exclusively for people who are busy scrolling on their phones.”
The Rip is now streaming on Netflix.
