The Dreadful trailer confirms movie’s release date
Lionsgate has unveiled the first official trailer for The Dreadful, a gothic horror thriller that reunites Game of Thrones stars Sophie Turner and Kit Harington, who share an on-screen kiss in the film. The trailer also confirms that the movie will be released theatrically on February 20.
Set in medieval England, The Dreadful follows Anne, portrayed by Turner. She is a woman living in isolation with her controlling mother-in-law, Morwen, played by Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden. The two live in a secluded, remote area while Anne’s husband is away at war.
Anne and Morwen’s existence is disrupted when the former learns that her husband did not survive the combat. This revelation comes just as Jago, a man from her past portrayed by Harington, unexpectedly returns, setting off a series of disturbing events. As tensions escalate, Morwen becomes increasingly possessive and warns Anne against giving in to “sin.”
Directed by Natasha Kermani, The Dreadful marks the first film collaboration between Turner and Harington since their eight-season run as siblings, Sansa Stark and Jon Snow, on HBO’s Game of Thrones. Notably, both actors have acknowledged the discomfort of shifting from playing siblings to romantic leads.
Turner, who also serves as a producer on the film, revealed that she personally suggested Harington for the role. During her appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, she recalled sending him the script. To this, Harington responded enthusiastically while noting how strange the experience would be.
After rereading the script herself, Turner said she quickly understood Harington’s hesitation. She stated, “Then I was reading [the script], and it’s like, ‘Kiss, kiss, sex, kiss, sex…’ And then I’m like, ‘Oh, shoot, that’s my brother.’”
The actress also described filming intimate scenes with Harington as awkward, admitting that the experience was “vile.”
Apart from Turner, Harington, and Harden, The Dreadful also features Laurence O’Fuarain and Jonathan Howard.
