Blue Beetle 2 Could Happen After This Update, Director Talks Future

James Gunn may have retconned most elements of the now-defunct DCEU, but he seems keen to expand upon the lore of the Xolo Maridueña-led Blue Beetle movie. In accordance, two integral members from the 2023 project have come forth to provide an update on the titular character’s future, all but confirming Blue Beetle 2.

Belissa Escobedo is positive that Blue Beetle 2 will happen

During a conversation about Season 2 of NBC’s Happy’s Place, Belissa Escobedo, who portrays Milagro Reyes, the younger sister of Maridueña’s Jaime Reyes, revealed that talks for the Blue Beetle sequel have already started taking place.

“Oh, absolutely. That’s totally in the works and in talks. So hopefully that’s happening soon,” Escobedo said of Blue Beetle 2 to Katie Doll of Comic Book Resources. She added, “I’m gonna see Xolo [Mariduena] soon. We’re going to do a Comic-Con together.”

Ángel Manuel Soto talks Blue Beetle’s DCU future

Meanwhile, Ángel Manuel Soto, who helmed Blue Beetle’s first big-screen appearance in 2023, also echoed Belissa Escobedo’s sentiments in a separate interview.

While speaking with The Direct about his upcoming directorial venture, The Wrecking Crew, the Puerto Rican filmmaker shared a similar update regarding Blue Beetle 2. He noted that there have been discussions about officially unveiling the Hispanic superhero as part of James Gunn’s DCU.

“Yeah, there have been conversations, and that’s all I can say. I mean, that’s fair. Conversations have been happening,” Soto said of the much-discussed Blue Beetle sequel. “And there’s definitely… James [Gunn] has been very vocal about keeping Blue Beetle in the DCU. So good things are coming for Jaime Reyes and his family.”

Notably, the DC Studios co-CEO has expressed interest in bringing back Xolo Maridueña as Blue Beetle in his recently-launched DCU. However, it remains unclear if the character will return in a direct sequel to the 2023 movie or in some other form of media.
