James Gunn Debunks DCU’s Batman Movie Release Date Report: ‘Fiction’
A report of a Batman movie release date had reignited excitement around DC’s next Dark Knight film, but James Gunn is urging fans not to believe everything they read online just yet.
James Gunn says recent DCU Batman movie report is ‘fiction’
The Brave and the Bold has been one of the slowest-moving projects announced under the new DC Studios banner. While several other DCU titles have shown visible progress, the animated Batman film has largely remained quiet, aside from confirmations that it is still in development and that Andy Muschietti remains attached to direct.
That changed when a report began circulating online claiming the screenplay for The Brave and the Bold was finished and that Warner Bros. Pictures was targeting a 2028 release date. Given how little official information has surfaced in recent months, the claim spread quickly among fans eager for concrete movement on the project.
However, the excitement didn’t last long. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn stepped in to directly debunk the rumor. Responding to a fan on Threads who asked whether the report was accurate, Gunn wrote, “Fiction, sorry. Screenplay isn’t finished.”
The claim originated from Dread Central, which stated that the script for The Brave and the Bold was complete and that a release window had already been identified. Gunn’s response dismissed both points in one sentence, confirming that the film is still in the writing stage.
Notably, the last major update about the movie came in June 2025. Gunn had then revealed that he was actively collaborating with a writer on the Batman script. He also described it as one of DC Studios’ top creative priorities, alongside Wonder Woman. Despite that focus, Gunn has consistently said no DCU film will move forward without a finished script he fully supports.
For now, the Batman movie’s development is ongoing, and there is no confirmed timeline for when the film will enter pre-production or receive an official release date window.
