A Minecraft Movie 2 Filming Window Revealed by Jason Momoa
Jason Momoa recently revealed the filming start date for A Minecraft Movie 2, thus confirming when production would start on the sequel. A follow-up installment was reported to be in development in April 2025, the same month the film hit theaters.
The sequel was confirmed months later, along with a Summer 2027 release date. Notably, both the sequel and its predecessor are based on Mojang Studios’ popular sandbox video game of the same name.
Jason Momoa reveals when A Minecraft Movie 2 begins filming
On The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Jason Momoa revealed that A Minecraft Movie 2 was happening “very soon,” adding that filming would start at the end of April 2026.
The Aquaman star then praised the script, claiming that it was “even better” than the first film, whose script he said “perplexed” him. “It’s so good. I was laughing out loud,” he added. “I haven’t laughed out loud in a very long time in a script.”
A Minecraft Movie 2 is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 23, 2027. Jared Hess, who helmed the first movie, will reprise directorial duties. In addition, he will co-write the screenplay with Chris Galletta, who co-wrote the first film with Chris Bowman, Gavin James, Hubbel Palmer, and Neil Widener.
Legendary Pictures, which produced the first film, will return as producers while also serving as financiers. Mary Parent and Cale Boyter will produce the film alongside Momoa, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, and Torfi Frans Ólaffson.
Momoa will return as Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison, and Jack Black is expected to reprise his role as Steve. However, it’s currently unclear if the other main cast members from the first film — Emma Meyers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge — will return.
At the time of the sequel’s announcement, Warner Bros. did not disclose details, stressing that they would “remain deep in the mine for now” (via Variety). However, Hess told Deadline that the sequel could focus on Steve and his female counterpart, Alex, teased in the post-credits scene of the first film.
