Kathleen Kennedy addressed long-standing speculation about the future of Star Wars during her transition out of Lucasfilm. The outgoing president confirmed the development of a new trilogy. She offered fresh insight into a project that has remained largely under wraps.
Kathleen Kennedy confirms Simon Kinberg’s long-speculated Star Wars trilogy
Kathleen Kennedy has officially confirmed that Simon Kinberg is actively working on a new Star Wars trilogy. “He’s working right now. He wrote something that we read in August, and it was very good, but not there,” Kennedy told Deadline.
She explained that Lucasfilm and Kinberg then overhauled the story and invested significant effort into a new treatment. “We’ve pretty much upended the story, and then spent a great deal of time on the treatment, which he finished literally about four weeks ago. And it’s a very detailed treatment, like 70 pages. And so he is expected to give us something in March,” she said.
Kennedy officially confirmed that Kinberg’s trilogy has progressed beyond the conceptual stage. She described the treatment as highly detailed and noted it signals serious momentum on the project. Kinberg previously worked with Lucasfilm on Star Wars Rebels and had long faced speculation about his involvement in developing a new saga.
In her comments, Kennedy also referenced the broader development slate. When asked about potential other films or spin-offs, she stated, “We’ve talked about this new trilogy and then the things that you’ve mentioned.” Kennedy emphasized Kinberg’s trilogy as part of Lucasfilm’s future planning, placing it among the studio’s confirmed upcoming projects, even though she didn’t share additional details in that exchange.
She further stated, “Dave, I know that Dave and Lynwen are very much on board with what Simon’s doing, and that would be a new trilogy. In the timeline of things, that takes you well into 2030 plus. So that’s really what’s up next.”
Kennedy confirmed that Kinberg’s trilogy is actively in development. He completed a detailed treatment, and Lucasfilm expects a full script by March. The trilogy will continue the story after Episode IX and will remain separate from other planned projects, including Star Wars: Starfighter and the Rey-centered film.
