Live-Action How to Train Your Dragon 2 Gets Oscar-Winner to Reprise Role
One of the original cast members from the animated How to Train Your Dragon franchise will be returning in the upcoming sequel to 2025’s blockbuster live-action remake. Universal Pictures is set to release the movie on June 11, 2027.
Who is joining the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2?
According to THR, Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett has officially signed on to reprise her role as Valka in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2. She will be the second original cast member who will get to join the live-action cast, following Gerard Butler. In the 2014 animated sequel, Blanchett’s Valka was introduced as Hiccup’s long-lost mother, who they thought was killed by a dragon. However, it was later revealed that she actually became a skilled dragon rider who, just like Hiccup, was able to form a connection with dragons.
The upcoming sequel will once again be written, directed, and produced by Oscar nominee Dean DeBlois, based on Cressida Cowell’s children’s book series of the same name. The movie will feature the return of Mason Thames as Hiccup, Nico Parker as Astrid, Gerard Butler as Stoick the Vast, Nick Frost as Gobber the Belch, Julian Dennison as Fishlegs, Gabriel Howell as Snotlout, Browyn James as Ruffnut, and Harry Trevaldwyn as Tuffnut. It is being produced by Marc Platt and Adam Siegel. During its theatrical run, the first installment earned a worldwide gross of over $631 million at the box office. The 2025 movie currently holds a Certified Fresh rating of 77% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 251 reviews.
Blanchett is no stranger to the fantasy genre, as she’s best known for her iconic performance as Galadriel in The Lord of the Rings franchise. She recently starred opposite Adam Driver in the comedy-drama movie Father Mother Sister Brother. The acclaimed star will next appear in the sci-fi comedy movie Alpha Gang, with Chris Pine and Dave Bautista.
