Another Mega Lord of the Rings Movie From Peter Jackson Is Possible

Peter Jackson has hinted that another major Lord of the Rings movie could still happen, despite the original film trilogy having concluded more than two decades ago. The filmmaker recently discussed the possibility while reflecting on the franchise’s legacy.

Peter Jackson says a mega Lord of the Rings documentary is possible

Oscar-winning director Peter Jackson has revealed that a sprawling documentary exploring the making of his Lord of the Rings films remains a possibility, even decades after the trilogy first arrived in theaters. The director shared the update while speaking with Empire to mark the 25th anniversary of the release of The Fellowship of the Ring.

During the interview, Jackson spoke about a project he has long wanted to pursue: a comprehensive documentary built around previously unseen production footage from the trilogy. According to him, the material offers a far more detailed look at how the films were made.

“The footage contains alternative takes, it contains bloopers, it contains a bit more of a sense of the mechanics of making the films,” Jackson explained. However, he acknowledged that the scale of the project has made it difficult to move forward. “But to this day, I haven’t persuaded [the studio], because obviously it’s a big undertaking,” the filmmaker said.

Jackson’s remarks are notable given that the extended editions of The Lord of the Rings already feature hours of behind-the-scenes content through the Appendices. Despite that, the director confirmed that a substantial amount of production footage remains unreleased.

As of now, no project has been formally approved. However, Jackson’s comments suggest that a larger, more detailed documentary could still be developed with studio backing. During the same interview, the director also addressed long-running fan speculation surrounding the “Extended Mithril Cut.” He clarified that such a version of the films does not exist.
