Wishful Thinking gets first look, plot details and premiere window

Wishful Thinking, a surrealist romantic comedy starring Maya Hawke and Lewis Pullman, will have its world premiere at the 2026 SXSW Film & TV Festival, held March 12–18 in Austin, Texas. Graham Parkes wrote and directed the film, which features in the Narrative Feature Competition presented by Kickstarter. It runs 105 minutes and falls under the comedy and sci-fi genres.

The story follows Julia and Charlie, a volatile couple living in Portland, Oregon. Julia is an ambitious game designer and Charlie is a struggling musician working in sound design. A friend urges Julia and Charlie to attend a couples therapy retreat led by twin healers known as the Tillies.

During the session, they become part of a metaphysical experiment. The therapy activates a karmic system that causes their relationship’s condition to influence real-world events such as earthquakes and financial markets. As global instability grows, the couple must confront the impact of their connection.

Lewis Pullman, Maya Hawke, Randall Park, Jake Shane, Kate Berlant, Amita Rao, and Eric Rahill star in the film. Christopher Ripley handles cinematography, Lilly Wilde edits, Natalie Groce leads production design, and Oliver Lewin composes the music. Sarah Mather, Graham Patrick Martin, and Cameron Fuller executive produce. Matt Smith, Dan Gedman, Kara Durrett, and Lewis Pullman serve as producers.

Highway 10, Buckwild, and Pinky Promise produce Wishful Thinking. Highway 10 also finances the project, with Pullman overseeing for Buckwild. Parkes, who co-founded the indie gaming label GoodbyeWorld Games, previously created the BAFTA-winning game Before Your Eyes. GoodbyeWorld Games plans to release the follow-up title Goodnight Universe in 2026. The film has not yet announced a distributor.
