The Odyssey Is the Pinnacle of Matt Damon’s Career, Actor Explains Why
After working in Hollywood for over 30 years, Matt Damon believes The Odyssey is the “pinnacle” of his career.
Why is The Odyssey the pinnacle of Matt Damon’s career?
Damon and Ben Affleck recently appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to promote their upcoming Netflix movie, The Rip. During the interview, Damon spoke about the “fantastic” opportunity he received to be the lead in Christopher Nolan‘s epic adaptation of The Odyssey.
“It was absolutely the pinnacle of my entire career,” Damon said.
Affleck was lucky enough to visit the set and witness the massive Hollywood production. Damon joked that Affleck was the only guest in six months of shooting. For Damon and the crew, there was no time to entertain guests or focus on anything other than filming the movie.
“It was such an ambitious project that the amount of work that needed to be done, there was just no time for anything else,” Damon explained. “I’ve never, ever done a movie that just required every single person to work to kind of give the maximum effort. I said to him [Affleck] that every location on that movie would have been the hardest location on any other movie I’ve ever done, and any day of work would have been harder than any other day on any other movie I’ve ever done.”
In The Odyssey, Damon stars as Odysseus, the Greek king of Ithaca who embarks on a treacherous journey home after the Trojan War. During his travels, Odysseus encounters several eye-opening creatures on his voyage, including a Cyclops.
Damon headlines a star-studded cast that includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Himesh Patel, Mia Goth, and Charlize Theron.
Nolan writes and directs The Odyssey, based on the epic poem by Homer. Nolan produces alongside Emma Thomas. The Odyssey is Nolan’s first movie since the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer.
The Odyssey is scheduled to be released on July 17, 2026.
