Hotel Transylvania 5 Officially in Works, Star Reveals Status
Hotel Transylvania 5 got a positive production update from one of the stars of the franchise, providing a ballpark indication of its release date. This update comes roughly two years after one of the creatives involved with the franchise acknowledged the possibility of a fifth installment.
So far, the franchise, which launched in 2012, has seen the release of four films, three short films, several video games, and one TV series, with one more series on the way. The first three films collectively grossed $1.3 billion at the global box office. Meanwhile, the fourth film skipped a theatrical release, going straight to Amazon Prime Video.
Keegan-Michael Key confirms Hotel Transylvania 5 is happening
While speaking with Variety at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards ceremony, Keegan-Michael Key revealed that he was going to start work on Hotel Transylvania 5 soon. Notably, Key plays Murray the Mummy in the franchise, having appeared from Hotel Transylvania 2 onward.
Since Key revealed that he was starting work on Hotel Transylvania 5 soon, the film could get a 2027 release date. However, Sony Pictures Animation and the creatives behind the Hotel Transylvania franchise have yet to confirm an official release window, let alone the cast and plot details.
Key’s comments come two years after Genndy Tartakovsky, who directed the first three films and co-wrote the third and fourth films, told Collider at SCAD’s Animation Fest — where he was honored with an Award of Excellence — that Sony would consider doing more films based on fan demand. He highlighted 2022’s Hotel Transylvania: Transformania’s success on Amazon Prime Video, adding, “I think they want more. So we’ll see what happens.”
Meanwhile, a second series based on the Hotel Transylvania series, Motel Transylvania, is currently in production for Netflix, with Tartakovsky involved in its creation. While originally planned for a 2025 release, the series will now reportedly hit streaming in 2027.
The spin-off will follow Mavis and Dracula, who move to California and set up a new resort for both humans and monsters.
