Acclaimed Time Travel Movie Is Leaving Netflix Very Soon

Netflix will soon remove one of the most acclaimed time travel comedies from its streaming library. With its departure date approaching, the film’s legacy and influence on the sci-fi genre continue to generate discussion among fans and critics alike.

Bill Murray’s Groundhog Day is leaving Netflix soon

Netflix will remove the 1993 film Groundhog Day on February 1, 2026. Harold Ramis directed the movie, which stars Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell. It currently streams only for subscribers on Netflix’s non-ad-supported tiers. The film is one of more than 145 titles leaving the platform this month.

In Groundhog Day, Murray plays weatherman Phil Connors. He becomes trapped in a time loop, reliving the same day repeatedly in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Although the story takes place in Punxsutawney, the crew filmed it in Woodstock, Illinois. The movie earned over $100 million worldwide. Its reported budget ranged between $14 million and $30 million.

The movie holds a “certified fresh” 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the critics’ consensus stating, “Smart, sweet, and inventive, Groundhog Day highlights Murray’s dramatic gifts while still leaving plenty of room for laughs.” Roger Ebert initially gave the film three out of four stars but later upgraded it to four, noting, “You have to stand back and slap yourself before you see how good it really is.”

Harold Ramis co-wrote the script with Danny Rubin. The film marked the last collaboration between Ramis and Murray before their falling out, which lasted years until a reconciliation shortly before Ramis’ death in 2014. Ramis told the A.V. Club that he had dreams about reuniting with Murray.

Groundhog Day has influenced numerous films and TV shows with its time loop concept. These include Edge of Tomorrow, Source Code, and the “Lullaby” episode from Season 2 of 12 Monkeys, in which a character recites a line from the film.

Bill Murray recently appeared in Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024) and The Phoenician Scheme (2025). His upcoming projects include The Ploughmen and Epiphany.
