Director of Marvel’s Biggest Box Office Flop Reacts to Film’s Failure
Nia DaCosta, the director of 2023’s The Marvels, has reacted to the movie’s mixed critical reception and disappointing box office performance two years after its release. In a recent interview, the filmmaker stressed that everyone who worked on the movie gave their best while also expressing gratitude for the friendships she formed on set.
The Marvels director Nia DaCosta talks The Marvels’ box office and reviews
Speaking with Deadline‘s Crew Call while promoting her new film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Nia DaCosta was asked about her thoughts on The Marvels’ underwhelming box office performance. Looking back on the experience of making the film and the discussions surrounding it, DaCosta responded by saying that the cast and crew gave their all while making the film.
She continued, “Everyone was trying to make a great film…and I will say I’m really happy to have those relationships.”
The Little Woods director revealed that she visited the set of Avengers: Doomsday last summer and reunited with the producers and some of her friends, while also meeting the Russo brothers. “So it was really nice, despite how everything went with the box office and the reviews, knowing that the relationships are so good,” she further stated. “I look back, and everyone tried their best, and everyone was trying to do the right thing, and it is what it is.”
Notably, DaCosta’s comments about some of her friends being in Doomsday seemingly tease the inclusion of Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel, and Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau in the film. However, Marvel Studios has yet to officially confirm the trio’s presence in the film.
Following its release, The Marvels reportedly grossed $206.1 million at the box office against a reported gross budget of $374 million.
The Marvels is currently streaming on Disney+. In addition to Larson, Vellani, and Parris, the film also stars Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh, and Samuel L. Jackson.
