Scarlett Johansson Dethroned as Highest-Grossing Star by Another Marvel Actor

Scarlett Johansson is no longer the highest-grossing movie star of all time, having been overtaken by another Marvel actor. Following the latest box office success of James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, Zoe Saldaña has surpassed Johansson’s career total.

Zoe Saldaña becomes the highest grossing star of all time after Avatar 3’s box office success

Zoe Saldaña has overtaken Scarlett Johansson to become the highest-grossing film star in global box office history. The shift at the top of the rankings follows the strong worldwide performance of Avatar: Fire and Ash, which has added significantly to Saldaña’s career earnings.

According to updated box office figures, Avatar: Fire and Ash crossed the $1.23 billion mark worldwide as of January 12. With that total added to her earnings, Saldaña’s career box office gross now stands at approximately $16.86 billion. This places her ahead of Johansson, whose earnings totals roughly to $16.43 billion (via The Numbers).

The Avatar franchise has been one of the biggest contributor to Saldaña’s box office dominance. Her role as Neytiri across the series accounts for roughly $6 billion of her total earnings.

However, her position at the top is also supported by her involvement in other major franchises. This includes the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where she portrayed Gamora, as well as appearances in the modern Star Trek films and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.

Johansson’s box office lead was driven largely by her role as Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Major releases such as Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Infinity War, and other Avengers films made up for a significant portion of her total. Meanwhile, additional success came from high-performing releases such as The Jungle Book and Sing.

Saldaña now leads a list that includes Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, and Robert Downey Jr. Other high-ranking names include Chris Pratt, Tom Cruise, Vin Diesel, Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, and Dwayne Johnson.
