Jennifer Lawrence Just Teased Her Hunger Games Return in Next Movie

Jennifer Lawrence may have just confirmed what Hunger Games fans have been speculating for months. The Oscar-winning actor acknowledged online reports linking her to a return as Katniss Everdeen in the upcoming The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.

Why Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss could return in new Hunger Games movie

When asked on Josh Horowitz’s Happy, Sad, Confused podcast about reconnecting with director Francis Lawrence, who is directing the upcoming Hunger Games prequel, Jennifer Lawrence responded, “Maybe we already have.”

Horowitz followed up by referencing the online rumors, prompting Lawrence to add, “Oh yeah, it is out on the internet, isn’t it?” While Jennifer Lawrence stopped short of offering details, the slight confirmation is her first public acknowledgment of the reports confirming her return to the Hunger Games.

Lawrence’s association with The Hunger Games remains a defining chapter of her career. She played Katniss Everdeen across four films released between 2012 and 2015. Her final casting was in Mockingjay – Part 2, which concluded Katniss’ role in the rebellion against President Snow.

Moreover, at first glance, Katniss’s appearance in Sunrise on the Reaping may seem unlikely. The film is set 24 years before the events of the original story. It is about Haymitch Abernathy during the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. However, Suzanne Collins’ book provides a narrative opening.

The book includes an epilogue set after the rebellion, where an older Haymitch reflects on his past while speaking with Katniss and Peeta Mellark. This framing device explains how Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss, alongside Josh Hutcherson as Peeta, could appear without disrupting the Hunger Games timeline.

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping stars Joseph Zada as a 16-year-old Haymitch. Additionally, Ralph Fiennes plays a middle-aged President Snow. The cast also includes McKenna Grace, Ben Wang, Elle Fanning, and Maya Hawke. The film is scheduled to release in theaters on November 20, 2026.
