Live-Action Tangled Movie Has Possibly Found Mother Gothel in Marvel Star

Disney’s upcoming Tangled remake has sparked conversation by eyeing a fan-favorite MCU actress for a key role. The live-action project has reportedly set its sights on the Marvel star to play Mother Gothel, the villain at the center of Rapunzel’s story.

Kathryn Hahn in talks to play Mother Gothel in live-action Tangled remake

Variety confirmed that Disney is considering Hahn for the role, with Teagan Croft set to play Rapunzel and Milo Manheim cast as Flynn Rider. Disney has not issued any public statement regarding Hahn’s potential casting in the live-action adaptation.

Mother Gothel, the antagonist in the original 2010 animated film, poses as Rapunzel’s overprotective guardian while using her magical hair to maintain eternal youth. The original film grossed nearly $600 million worldwide and featured Donna Murphy as the voice of Gothel.

Michael Gracey, who directed The Greatest Showman, will direct the live-action remake for Disney’s latest adaptation project. Jennifer Kaytin Robinson wrote the script, and Kristin Burr is producing through Burr! Productions, and Lucy Kitada serves as executive producer on the upcoming film.

Deadline first reported that Scarlett Johansson had considered the role of Mother Gothel but exited due to her commitments to The Batman 2 and The Exorcist reboot. Fans then turned their attention to Hahn, advocating for her to take the role. According to Deadline, Hahn’s name began circulating online following Johansson’s departure.

Disney announced the film in 2024 but paused development after Snow White received underwhelming reactions. The studio resumed work in October 2025 and released casting updates in early January 2026. Disney has not set an official release date for the live-action Tangled.

Kathryn Hahn recently starred in Agatha All Along, a spinoff of WandaVision, and the Apple TV+ series The Studio. She also joined the cast of David O. Russell’s upcoming biopic Madden, appearing alongside Christian Bale and Nicolas Cage.
