The Odyssey’s Matt Damon Reveals How Much Weight He Lost for Odysseus
Matt Damon, who underwent a significant physical transformation for his role as Odysseus in The Odyssey, discussed his weight loss for the part. In a recent interview, the actor revealed how director Christopher Nolan wanted him to look for the film and opened up about his immense training and rigid diet.
Matt Damon says he went back to his high-school weight for The Odyssey
Matt Damon recently appeared on Jason and Travis Kelce’s New Heights podcast, where he discussed topics like his upcoming film The Rip. During the discussion, the Kelces brought up The Odyssey, with Jason telling Damon that he saw pictures of the latter “getting pretty yoked up,” which were circulating online.
Damon, who told Jason that he sported a beard like the latter’s for a year, said, “Yeah, I was in really good shape. I lost a lot of weight. [Nolan] said he wanted me like lean but strong. It’s a weird thing.”
The Good Will Hunting actor shared that he stopped eating gluten. He added that he “used to walk around between 185 and 200 pounds” and filmed The Odyssey at 167 pounds. Damon continued, “I haven’t been that light since high school. So it was a lot of training and a really strict diet.”
Travis asked Matt Damon if a trainer helped with his weight loss, or if he “already had someone in mind.” The actor replied that he worked with a trainer who could “do anything.” “It’s just having kind of a clear goal and setting it,” he shared.
The Oscar winner compared his training experience to that of the Kelce’s experience training for an NFL season. “When I do that or when I do the Jason Bourne movies or whatever, it feels almost like a season,” he explained, adding, “I would imagine, what that feels like for you guys where you’re preparing.”
He continued, “It’s like just part of your day. It’s part of your job, right? It’s like you get really routinized about it and kind of build your day around all that stuff. That’s kind of the physical side of getting ready.”
Damon then revealed that he has been gluten-free since cutting out gluten. He added, “It’s been so long since I’ve had gluten, I can’t tell if it’s good or not. So that’s a good sign.”
