The Naked Gun 2: Liam Neeson Comedy Gets Sequel Update
Akiva Schaffer has offered an update on the future of The Naked Gun reboot following its successful 2025 release. The director addressed the status of a potential sequel and shared where things currently stand with the Liam Neeson-led comedy franchise.

Akiva Schaffer, director of the Liam Neeson-led The Naked Gun reboot, confirmed that a sequel is not currently planned. Speaking with CBR at the Critics’ Choice Awards, Schaffer stated, “We are not planning another,” citing recent changes in ownership at Paramount. “It was about seven days after the movie came out, and so, you know, we’re waiting to hear from see if they would want it,” he added.
Despite the lack of official plans, Schaffer noted that the creative team has potential ideas. He said, “So Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, who wrote the script with me, they do have a list of gags.” Producer Erica Huggins added, “We have a big idea that we had talked about,” with Schaffer confirming, “Yeah, we’ve got a few.”
The 2025 reboot marks the fourth installment in The Naked Gun franchise and stars Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen’s original character. The supporting cast includes Pamela Anderson, Kevin Durand, and Paul Walter Hauser.
The film received a generally positive reception from critics and audiences. It holds an 87% critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 72% audience score from over 2,500 user reviews. The film won Best Comedy at the Critics’ Choice Awards, beating competitors like The Phoenician Scheme and Eternity.
At the box office, the film grossed over $102 million worldwide against a reported $42 million budget. Notably, the franchise originated with the 1982 TV series Police Squad! and the 1988 film The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!
