Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Shows Marvel Will Finally Use X-Men Hero in Right Way
The latest teaser trailer for Avengers: Doomsday shows that the MCU character could finally be using a beloved X-Men character in the right way.
Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday is currently in post-production. Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, also known as the Russo Brothers, the movie will be released in United States theaters at the end of this year. The sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, follows in 2027.
So far, Marvel has released three Avengers: Doomsday teaser trailers. The first one revealed that Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers is officially returning to the MCU, while the second focused on Chris Hemsworth’s Thor. Following this third trailer, a fourth teaser is expected to be released next week.
What do we see in the Avengers: Doomsday teaser trailer?
The latest Avengers: Doomsday teaser trailer puts a spotlight on the X-Men, as it offers the first look at the return of Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and Ian McKellen’s Magneto.
The end of the teaser, however, gives us a glimpse of James Marsden’s Scott Summers/Cyclops. Now donning a comic-accurate suit, the brief moment where he emits an optic blast teases that this could be Cyclops’ best role yet.
There are still a lot of unknowns, of course: Why is he so angry? What’s that giant thing walking behind him? Is the X-Men’s entire world going to be destroyed during Avengers: Doomsday? We’ll find out come December. This teaser, though, shows that Cyclops is going to be used in a way he hasn’t been before when it comes to film. Marsden gives a fine performance in the Fox X-Men movies; however, those films never really tap into the full potential of the character that is often displayed in the comics. The movies mostly have him caught up in a love triangle between Jean and Wolverine, and there’s little else about the character that’s ever explored. Then, in X-Men: The Last Stand, he’s abruptly killed, and that’s just the end of Cyclops.
X-Men ’97 explored Cyclops more in-depth, and — while there’s a whole lot of characters in Avengers: Doomsday, leaving it unclear how much screen-time they’ll all get — it appears that the Russos’ new movie is seizing the opportunity to do the same. At the very least, they’re promising us a take on the character that hasn’t yet been done in live-action.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars is then dated for December 17, 2027.
