James Gunn Is ‘Excited’ for Warner Bros. & Netflix Deal Despite Unknowns
James Gunn has commented on the Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery deal.
Netflix may be acquiring Warner Bros. in the near future, as the streaming service previously announced plans to purchase the David Zaslav-led company. The deal is not yet set in stone, and there are still many unknowns that will need to be discussed in the coming months and years.
Warner Bros. Pictures owns DC Studios, which is home to Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU. There’s been much discussion about what will happen with the DCU and if it will continue as planned if the Warner Bros. and Netflix deal goes through.
What did James Gunn say about the Warner Bros. and Netflix deal?
Speaking on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast, Gunn addressed why he was “excited” for the potential deal even though there were still a lot of variables that are up in the air.
“Do I have hopes? No,” Gunn said. “I really don’t, because everything is unknown. I think it’s all really exciting, frankly. So I hope and pray for the best. I also — I’ve been through these sorts of changes so many times…Always be careful what you wish for because you don’t really know until you know. And I hope it goes well. I think there’s exciting — every direction has really exciting things for DC, so I’m excited about where it’s going to go.”
The DCU officially kicked off in December 2024 with Creature Commandos, while it then continued in 2025 with Superman and Peacemaker Season 2. Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface are all scheduled to arrive later this year, while the Superman follow-up movie, titled Man of Tomorrow, is dated for 2027.
Several other DCU projects have been announced and are in various stages of development, such as Andy Muschietti’s The Brave and the Bold, though none of them have release dates at this time.
