Paul Rudd’s Anaconda Movie Gets Bad RT Score but Beats Original Movie

The latest Anaconda film is here, and even though it isn’t what fans of the action-adventure horror franchise are used to, the Paul Rudd and Jack Black-led meta reboot has secured better reviews than the original 1997 movie. Despite garnering an underwhelming response, with most critics describing it as a mediocre attempt at redefining the franchise, Anaconda has also managed to attain a better Rotten Tomatoes score than its 1997 predecessor.

Paul Rudd and Jack Black’s Anaconda movie fails to impress critics in reviews

Featuring Paul Rudd and Jack Black in the lead, the Tom Gormican-helmed Anaconda serves as a meta reboot of the classic horror franchise. The movie follows two lifelong friends, Griff and Doug, as they attempt to remake Anaconda, their favorite film of all time. Nevertheless, their plan soon goes awry when a gigantic snake ends up picking up their trail.

A comedic take on the otherwise grisly film series, the revamped attempt seemed to have fallen short of what it was aiming to achieve. In his review, HollywoodChicago.com’s Patrick McDonald described Anaconda as “weirdly introspective enough to work, but it took the combined powers of Black, Rudd, and Zahn to keep something going.” He also added that the movie was “not the powerhouse Christmas comedy, but not a bomb either.”

Meanwhile, ComingSoon’s Jonathon Sim also provided an average review of the movie, giving it a rating of 5/10. “While Anaconda has its moments where it can really ratchet up the over-the-top humor and deliver on the entertaining experience you’re hoping for, it ultimately misses the mark,” he noted.

Furthermore, Jeffrey Harris of 411mania called out the meta reboot’s disappointing attempt at humor, stating, “Anaconda fails most at being funny. The movie tries to position itself as a clever parody riffing on Hollywood’s IP obsession, but instead, pathetically falls flat on its face, rather than delivering strong, genuine laughs.”

However, FandomWire’s M.N. Miller had a slightly better opinion of Anaconda, stating that it “works by being absurdly funny, creating something fresh and new by reinventing a flawed film that has somehow stuck in our minds for decades, probably because of streaming.”

Anaconda gets better Rotten Tomatoes score than Jennifer Lopez’s original

Although Paul Rudd’s Anaconda has mostly received mixed-to-bad reviews, it seems to have attained a better critical standing than its 1997 counterpart. The parody reboot currently has a Tomatometer score of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 84 reviews.

This surpasses the original Anaconda’s Tomatometer score of 40%. The movie has also secured a much higher approval rating from viewers, boasting an impressive Popcornmeter score of 79%. In sharp contrast, its predecessor has an abysmal audience score of 24% on the review-aggregation website.
