Henry Cavill’s Superman Photo That Ensured His Man of Steel Casting Revealed
Zack Snyder, who has been sharing photos from his filmography, including his DCEU movies, over the past several months, recently treated fans to two photos of Henry Cavill in Christopher Reeve‘s Superman suit.
Notably, Cavill wore the suit while screen testing for the lead role in Man of Steel. Although Cavill’s run as Superman came to a jarring and abrupt end, his portrayal of the character holds a special place in many fans’ hearts.
Zack Snyder shares Henry Cavill’s Superman photos in Christopher Reeve’s suit
Zack Snyder shared two photos of Henry Cavill wearing Christopher Reeve’s Superman suit on Instagram. The first one is a long shot showing Cavill standing on a platform and looking to the side, against the backdrop of blue clouds and bright sunlight.
The sunlight casts a shadow of Cavill’s figure on the ground, while also darkening much of the outfit, leaving only the top left portion of the suit and the “S” symbol visible. “Henry Cavill. The original Superman suit. This photo. It was undeniable,” Snyder captioned the post.
Meanwhile, the second photo is a medium shot of the first one. Notably, mountains are visible, albeit blurred, in the background. “With the last image I shared, and this one we showed WB everyone agreed: Henry Cavill was Superman. That’s where the journey began.” -Merry Christmas,” Snyder captioned this post.
These photos come eight years after Snyder shared a black-and-white picture of Cavill in Reeve’s suit on Vero. He captioned the post, “First test with Henry… I knew right away he was my Superman” (via The Hollywood Reporter).
The Watchmen filmmaker revealed in a 2016 interview with Dejour that Cavill wore Reeve’s suit for the Man of Steel audition process since the suit for the film was not yet available. He also recalled how everyone reacted upon seeing Cavill in the suit. Snyder said, “He put it on and when he came out of the trailer, everyone was like, ‘Dang, you’re Superman!'”
Previously, in a 2011 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Snyder said that the reaction to Cavill in the suit was different from the reaction to other actors in the suits. He stated, “He walked out and no one laughed. Other actors put that suit on and it’s a joke, even if they’re great actors. Henry put it on, and he exuded this kind of crazy-calm confidence that just made me go, ‘Wow. Okay, this is Superman.'”
