Rogue One’s ‘Unfinished’ Script Was a Challenge for 2 Star Wars Actors
2016’s Rogue One may have been one of the better Star Wars films released in recent years, but the project was far from well-planned, with its script undergoing multiple rewrites right up to the end. In a recent interview, Mads Mikkelsen, who played expert crystallographer Galen Erso in the prequel movie, revealed that Rogue One writers could never settle on a final draft, which ended up causing trouble for the two leads of the film.
Mads Mikkelsen says Rogue One writers never ‘locked a draft’
The Hannibal star recently disclosed that Rogue One: A Star Wars Story faced a multitude of problems during production, with the movie going through several reshoots due to the constant changes in its script.
“For a Star Wars film, the script was surprisingly unfinished,” Mads Mikkelsen noted while speaking with Variety, before adding, “It kept changing. One would think that was already done. I don’t think they ever locked in a draft. I think they kept working on it and improvised, and went back and reshot stuff. And then came up with a better idea.”
Mikkelsen then remarked that the script situation didn’t have much impact on his experience. However, it did affect Felicity Jones and Diego Luna’s characters due to their larger importance to the plot of Rogue One.
“[It] was kind of livable for a character like mine. I mean, I had my mission, I knew what it was, but it was obviously tricky for the two young heroes, not knowing exactly what they were carrying into a room of baggage,” the Danish actor stated.
Notably, Jones leads the proceedings in Rogue One, portraying Jyn Erso, the daughter of Mikkelsen’s Galen Erso. Meanwhile, Luna dons the mantle of Alliance leader Cassian Andor. He plays a huge part in helping Jyn and his fellow rebels secure the schematics for the Galactic Empire’s Death Star.
Despite the difficulties he faced during the filming of Rogue One, Mads Mikkelsen is content with the eventual output. He concluded his account on the fan-favorite prequel movie by noting, “I think it turned out to be a really nice film.”
