Avengers: Doomsday’s Russo Brothers Reveal Reason for Surprise MCU Return
The first Avengers: Doomsday trailer featured the shocking return of Steve Rogers. Now that it’s official, the Russo Brothers shared heartfelt comments about Chris Evans.
What did Avengers: Doomsday’s Russo Brothers say about Chris Evans’ return?
Evans last appeared as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Endgame. Evans’ return as Steve Rogers/Captain America had been rumored for a while, but it was always unconfirmed. The new trailer confirms Evans’ involvement in the upcoming Avengers movie.
Rogers does not speak in the trailer, but it does show him pulling up to Peggy Carter’s house on a motorcycle. After staring at his Captain America suit, Rogers holds a baby before the trailer reads, “Steve Rogers will return in Avengers: Doomsday.”
Following the trailer’s debut, the Russo Brothers posted the footage on their Instagram with a caption dedicated to the importance of Steve Rogers.
“The character that changed our lives,” the Russo Brothers wrote. “The story that brought us all here together. It was always going to come back to this.”
The Russo Brothers began their Marvel careers as the directors of Captain America: Winter Soldier, which featured Evans as the titular Captain America. The Russos then directed Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
After a seven-year hiatus, the Russos are back for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The Marvel Studios movie will be a team-up adventure, with characters of the past and present — including the Fantastic Four, the original X-Men, the New Avengers, and the Avengers — coming together to battle Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr.
Rogers is the first of a rumored four-trailer release strategy. The second and third trailers reportedly feature Thor and Doctor Doom, respectively. The fourth trailer is believed to be a general teaser with multiple characters.
Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on December 18, 2026.
