One of the highest-grossing video game movies of all time has officially found a new streaming home at Prime Video. This comes more than seven months after the star-studded movie had its successful theatrical release.
What popular video game movie is now available on Prime Video today?
As of today, Warner Bros.’ A Minecraft Movie, starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, is now available for streaming on Prime Video. The live-action adventure film was based on Mojang Studios’ best-selling video game of the same name. Despite its massive commercial success, the adaptation failed to capture critics’ attention as it only garnered a Tomatometer score of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 197 reviews.
Since its theatrical debut, A Minecraft Movie has officially become the second-highest-grossing video game movie of all time. It garnered a gross of over $958 million at the global box office, nearly doubling Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s previous 2024 record of over $492 million. However, the Minecraft adaptation wasn’t able to beat The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s record, which continues to retain the title of highest-grossing video game movie ever with a worldwide gross of over $1.3 billion.
“Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival! Four misfits—Garrett ‘The Garbage Man’ Garrison, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination,” reads the official synopsis. “To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve. Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.”
The movie was directed by Jared Hess, with Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, Neil Widener, Gavin James, and Chris Galletta writing the screenplay, based on a story by Allison Schroeder, Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer. The movie also stars Jennifer Coolidge as Vice Principal Marlene, Emma Myers as Natalie, Danielle Brooks as Dawn, Sebastian Hansen as Henry, Rachel House as Malgosha, Matt Berry as the voice of Nitwit, Jemaine Clement as Daryl and the voice of Bruce, and Kate McKinnon.
