James Cameron’s Latest Comments Could Be Bad News for Avatar 4
James Cameron recently opened up about the future of the Avatar movies. The Titanic director also reacted to fans debating whether he will spend all his life making more movies in the franchise. Cameron’s latest instalment of the Avatar franchise comes out on December 19, 2025.
James Cameron has ‘other stories’ to tell besides Avatar 4
During his recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, director James Cameron shared his thoughts and experiences with the making of Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third installment of the Avatar franchise. As he got deeper and deeper into the Avatar conversation, Cameron, at one point, said, “I’ve got other stories to tell, and I’ve got other stories to tell within Avatar.”
“What won’t happen is, I won’t go down the rabbit hole of exclusively making only Avatar for multiple years. I’m going to figure out another way that involves more collaboration. I’m not saying I’m going to step away as a director, but I’m going to pull back from being as hands-on with every tiny aspect of the process,” he added.
However, he didn’t entirely ignore the possibility of this film turning out to be the last Avatar movie. Earlier in the conversation, addressing a few fans who had a problem with the length of the film, he said, “I like to please the audience. I’m not somebody that likes the audience to come out of the theater going, ‘What the f— was that?'”
Further, speaking of the franchise’s future, Cameron remarked, “This can be the last one. There’s only one [unanswered question] in the story. We may find that the release of Avatar 3 proves how diminished the cinematic experience is these days, or we may find it proves the case that it’s as strong as it ever was — but only for certain types of films.”
“It’s a coin toss right now. We won’t know until the middle of January,” he added. Hence, fans will have to wait at least a month to see how the film performs at the box office before speculating about the future of Avatar.
