James Gunn & Zack Snyder Collab Despite Warring DC Fans

James Gunn and Zack Snyder have once again shown why DC fans don’t need to go to war with one another.

Snyder directed a number of entries in the DCEU, including 2013’s Man of Steel, 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and 2017’s Justice League, the latter of which had a complicated production history that resulted in the release of 2021’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The DCEU officially ended in 2023 with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Following that, Gunn and Peter Safran launched the DCU at Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios, which began in 2024 with Creature Commandos and so far also includes Superman and Peacemaker Season 2, while a number of other projects are in development.

What did Zack Snyder and James Gunn collaborate on?

On Instagram, Snyder and Gunn collaborated on a post recounting their experiences on 2004’s Dawn of the Dead. A remake of George A. Romero’s 1978 film of the same name, Dawn of the Dead was directed by Snyder, while the screenplay was written by Gunn.

Snyder wrote, “Proud father moment on Dawn of the Dead (2004) — written by the one and only @jamesgunn. What a fun time!!”

Gunn added, “Amazing times.”

While Snyder and Gunn both have their respective fan bases who constantly argue with one another online, the two directors are friends. Gunn, for example, previously said he consulted Snyder over whether or not he should give Superman red trunks in the 2025 movie, while they also both voiced themselves in a scene featured in an episode of Rick and Morty that premiered earlier this year. Reports that there is any kind of bad blood between the two of them are wildly untrue.

With a cast that includes Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber, Mekhi Phifer, Ty Burrell, and more, Dawn of the Dead is currently available to stream on Starz.
