Avatar 3 Box Office Projection Can’t Match Way of Water
The box office predictions for Avatar: Fire and Ash are rolling in, and the numbers suggest the third entry will fall behind The Way of Water.
What is the current Avatar 3 box office projection?
According to Deadline, Avatar: Fire and Ash should open between $340 million and $380 million at the worldwide box office. On the domestic front, Avatar 3 is looking at an opening weekend above $90 million.
Those projections are behind The Way of Water’s global opening of $444 million and domestic haul of $134 million. However, Fire and Ash will beat the worldwide and domestic opening weekends of Avatar, which totaled $232.2 million and $77 million, respectively.
Avatar: Fire and Ash continues the adventures of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) on Pandora. The third movie picks up roughly a year after the events of The Way of Water, with Jake and his wife, Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), still grieving the loss of their eldest son, Neteyam. For the first time in the franchise, the main antagonists stem from another Na’vi tribe, the Mangkwan clan. Also known as the Ash People, the Mangkwan are led by Varang (Oona Chaplin), who forms an alliance with Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang) in their fight against Jake and his clan.
Other returning cast members include Sigourney Weaver as Kiri, Cliff Curtis as Tonowari, Britain Dalton as Lo’ak, Trinity Bliss as Tuk, Jack Champion as Spider, Bailey Bass as Reya, and Kate Winslet as Ronal.
James Cameron directs Avatar: Fire and Ash from a screenplay he co-wrote with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. Cameron is a producer along with Jon Landau, who tragically passed away in July 2024.
Avatar: Fire and Ash opens in theaters on December 19, 2025. Disney still plans to release two more Avatar sequels: Avatar 4 in 2029 and Avatar 5 in 2031.
