Man of Tomorrow: Brainiac Role Gets Confusing Update from James Gunn

James Gunn has confirmed Brainiac is coming to the DCU, but there’s a confusing twist.

Man of Tomorrow is the upcoming Superman follow-up movie that is being released in 2027. Directed by Gunn, the DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures superhero movie will see David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult reprise their respective roles as Clark Kent/Superman and Lex Luthor.

What did James Gunn say about Brainiac and the DCU?

TheWrap reported last month that the villain of Man of Tomorrow will be Brainiac; however, Gunn has not yet confirmed that the DC character will truly be appearing in the new movie.

Earlier this week, Gunn then shut down rumors suggesting that Dave Bautista was the top choice to play Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow.

“Let’s forget a moment I’ve never said Brainiac was in the movie,” Gunn wrote. “I freaking love [Bautista] & I have many ideas for who he could play in the DCU. But he & I have never discussed a role in Man of Tomorrow, nor have we discussed it amongst ourselves at DC. In addition, truly, NONE of the names, from the six or seven I’ve seen rumored for a role, have auditioned or been discussed at all. In general I’m just letting the silly rumors go – and this is certainly not the silliest I’ve heard recently – but Dave is a friend and that makes it more irritating. Btw I’m not blaming the poster here – I imagine this is coming from other places.”

When asked why he was addressing this rumor, Gunn said on Threads, “There are numerous reasons. I said why I addressed this one in the post. Dave is a friend. I don’t need a bunch of stories out there about why he didn’t get the job or whatever when someone else is eventually cast.”

Gunn was then asked if this was confirmation that Brainiac was part of Man of Tomorrow. The Superman director responded by reiterating the word “eventually,” which neither confirms nor denies that Brainiac will be part of the 2027 movie. That said, it does give fans assurance that, at some point, they will see the iconic villain somewhere in the DCU — he just won’t be played by Bautista.

Man of Tomorrow will be released on July 9, 2027.
