Jack Black on Why Jumanji 3 Is Actually Jumanji 5
Jack Black believes the upcoming Jumanji 3 is really Part 5 of the film series, and he recently explained his reasoning. Black played Professor Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon in 2017’s Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and 2019’s Jumanji: The Next Level. He will reprise the role in the next and so-far-untitled Jumanji movie.
Jack Black on why the upcoming Jumanji movie should be considered Part 5
Jack Black recently shared details about the filming of the next Jumanji film during an interview with Entertainment Tonight at the premiere of his new movie Anaconda. He confirmed that he was currently filming Jumanji 3 before he was asked what hijinks he was getting into with Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart on that set.
In response, Black said, “Yeah, I am in Jumanji 3 right now. You could call it Jumanji 4 if you count the original with Robin Williams. And, really, you could call it Jumanji 5 if you count the Jon Favreau film called Zathura, which was a sequel to Jumanji. So, I like to say I’m working on Jumanji 5. And it’s really fun.”
The Kung Fu Panda star continued, “You know we got Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. You know we got Kevin Hart. You know we got Karen Gillan. And you know we got Danny DeVito. It’s an incredible cast.” Black went on to declare that the script for “Jumanji 5” makes for the “best Jumanji so far.”
Black’s comments come as the 1995 movie celebrates its 30th anniversary. The original Jumanji film debuted in US theaters on December 15, 1995, after premiering in Culver City on December 10. Jon Favreau’s Zathura: A Space Adventure came out in 2005.
The upcoming Jumanji sequel’s cast includes Johnson as Dr. Xander “Smolder” Bravestone, Hart as Franklin “Mouse” Finbar, Gillan as Ruby Roundhouse, Nick Jonas as Jefferson “Seaplane” McDonough, and DeVito as Edward “Eddie” Gilpin. The movie is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 11, 2026.
