Knives Out 3 Continues Predictable Killer Tradition With a Twist

Knives Out 3 has continued an intriguing pattern established by the previous two films when it comes to revealing its killer.

In each movie, the killer was played by an actor who has appeared in a Marvel movie or has starred in multiple MCU films or television shows. Further, both Knives Out 3 and its predecessor, Glass Onion, have made things more interesting by also killing off characters played by MCU actors. However, the third film brings a unique twist to the tradition, setting up new pathways for its implementation in potential future films of the murder-mystery franchise.

Spoilers for Knives Out 3 ahead:

The killer in a Knives Out movie is always a big MCU name

In each Knives Out movie, the killer has been a character played by an MCU actor.

In the first film, the killer was revealed to be Ransom, portrayed by Chris Evans, who played Captain America in the MCU films. Ransom killed Fran and also tried to frame Marta (Ana de Armas) for killing his grandfather, Harlan, who actually took his own life.

Then, in the second film, Miles Bron, played by Edward Norton — who played Bruce Banner/Hulk in Marvel’s The Incredible Hulk — was revealed to be Andi and Duke’s killer.

Finally, Knives Out 3 upped the ante by not only continuing the tradition but also revealing two characters — played by actors with MCU histories — as Wicks’ killers. The culprits were Glenn Close’s Martha and Jeremy Renner’s Dr. Nat. Close appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy as Nova Prime, while Renner plays Hawkeye in the MCU. Although Nat killed Wicks, it was Martha who orchestrated his murder, adding a new layer to the franchise’s traditional plot twist. In addition, Nat killed the groundskeeper and Martha’s lover, Samson, to get his hands on Wicks’ grandfather Prentice’s diamond. Notably, Close’s Martha was the first time in the franchise that a woman was revealed to be a killer.

Knives Out 2 and 3 also killed off characters played by MCU actors. In the second film, Duke, killed by Norton’s Bron, was played by Dave Bautista, who plays Drax in the MCU.

The third film killed off multiple characters played by MCU actors. By the end of the film, Wicks, played by Thanos actor Josh Brolin, Samson, played by Thomas Haden Church, who played Sandman in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Close’s Martha, Renner’s Nat, and Grace — played by Annie Hamilton, who played Ana in Hawkeye — all died.
