New Live-Action Beauty and the Beast Movie in Development, First Details Revealed
A new live-action Beauty and the Beast movie is in development at Disney.
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, which is based on a French fairy tale, was released in 1991. The film became an instant classic and became the first-ever animated movie to receive a nomination for the Best Picture Academy Award. It was followed by two direct-to-video sequels: 1997’s Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas and 1998’s Beauty and the Beast: Belle’s Magical World, while there was also a 1999 alternate continuity film titled Belle’s Tales of Friendship.
In 2017, Disney turned Beauty and the Beast into a live-action movie directed by Bill Condon. Having grossed over $1.2 billion at the worldwide box office, the film stars Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as the Beast, and Luke Evans as Gaston.
What do we know about the new live-action Beauty and the Beast movie?
Per Deadline, Disney is now planning to continue the live-action Beauty and the Beast franchise, as a film centered around Gaston is now in development. Dave Callaham (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) is writing the script, with a previous draft coming from Kate Herron and Briony Redman. Michelle Rejwan is producing, while no director is yet attached to the project.
It’s unclear if Evans will reprise his role in the movie or if Disney plans to recast. Shortly after the 2017 movie was released, there were talks about doing a live-action Beauty and the Beast TV show, though nothing ultimately came of it.
“While plot details are vague for this version, sources say it will be a completely new and original version with a new actor playing the part with the film having ‘swashbuckling’ tones to it,” Deadline’s article notes. “Insiders say the studio is very high on the idea.”
The new live-action Beauty and the Best movie does not yet have a release date.
