Man of Tomorrow: Matt Smith’s Brainiac Role Gets Bad News

Ongoing Man of Tomorrow rumors may have linked several actors to the proposed role of Brainiac in the DCU movie, but according to James Gunn, none of these claims carry any merit whatsoever. In a recent discussion, the DC Studios co-CEO weighed in on the speculations of who’ll don the mantle of the superintelligent entity, confirming that it’s not long-term collaborator Dave Bautista.

James Gunn clarifies Brainiac’s Man of Tomorrow casting rumors

On December 14, Gunn addressed the theories regarding the much-discussed role of Brainiac, revealing that he and wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista “have never discussed” anything about the part.

“Oh boy. Let’s forget a moment I’ve never said Brainiac was in the movie. I freaking love @davebautista & I have many ideas for who he could play in the DCU. But he & I have never discussed a role in Man of Tomorrow, nor have we discussed it amongst ourselves at DC,” the Guardians of the Galaxy director shared on Threads.

Gunn further added that while it may not be Bautista who’ll play Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow, other actors who have seemingly been in the running for the part are also far from being in contention as of now. “In addition, truly, NONE of the names, from the six or seven I’ve seen rumored for a role, have auditioned or been discussed at all,” he wrote.

Hollywood mainstays who had previously emerged as the frontrunners for Brainiac’s role in the DCU included Claes Bang, Matt Smith, and Sam Rockwell, with certain reports suggesting that Bang had even tested for the part.

Nevertheless, Gunn has now debunked all such theories, going as far as to say, “In general I’m just letting the silly rumors go – and this is certainly not the silliest I’ve heard recently – but Dave is a friend and that makes it more irritating.”

Man of Tomorrow is currently on track to come out in theaters on July 9, 2027.
