What happens in the Alpha trailer?

The new trailer highlights the story of Alpha, a 13-year-old who seemingly contracts a mysterious new disease. Although her tests are negative, her family believes her to have the disease, and she begins hanging out with her uncle, who has also contracted the disease.

Alpha also stars Finnegan Oldfield, Louai El Amrousy, Jean-Charles Clichet, and Christophe Perez. The film is written by Ducournau as well. Alpha had its world premiere at the main competition of the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, and was also nominated for the Palme d’Or, the show’s biggest award.

Currently, it holds a 57% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, receiving mostly mixed reviews from critics, who praise the acting but point to narrative issues as a problem. For Mackey, this is her latest film following two starring roles in 2025’s Hot Milk and Ella McCay. She’ll next star in Greta Gerwig’s Narnia movie, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, as well as J.J. Abrams’ upcoming movie Ghostwriter.

Ducournau’s debut film was 2016’s coming-of-age body horror drama Raw, which received critical acclaim upon its release. Her follow-up movie, Titane, also earned massive praise, with Ducournau becoming the second female director to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes.
