Oscar Winner’s Notorious Movie That Flopped Gets Surprise Rerelease Soon
Megalopolis, a notorious sci-fi drama from Oscar-winning filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola, will be rereleased in theaters.
Coppola is partnering with select Alamo Drafthouse locations to screen Megalopolis on January 1, 2026. The screening will feature a special prerecorded Q&A with Coppola.
“Megalopolis will be shown this New Year’s Day in select theaters around the country,” Coppola wrote on his Instagram. “It’s my hope that every New Year’s Day Megalopolis will become a fulcrum of discussion about the betterment of society and humanity.”
Who is involved with Megalopolis?
Adam Driver stars as Cesar Catilina, a New Rome architect who battles with Mayor Franklin Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito) over the city’s future.
“The City of New Rome is at a crossroads. At one end sits Cesar Catilina (Driver), the idealistic artist striving for a utopian future, and at the other sits Mayor Franklin Cicero (Giancarlo Esposito), a powerful figure perpetuating greed, special interests, and partisan warfare,” reads the synopsis. “Their titanic struggle will shake the foundations of their city and lay the groundwork for a new tomorrow.”
Besides Driver and Esposito, Megalopolis stars Nathalie Emmanuel, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jon Voight, Laurence Fishburne, Kathryn Hunter, and Dustin Hoffman.
Coppola wrote and directed Megalopolis, his first feature film since 2011’s Twixt. Coppola repeatedly said that Megalopolis was his dream project. Without a studio behind him, Coppola spent approximately $120 million of his own money to finance Megalopolis.
Released by Lionsgate in September 2024, Megalopolis bombed at the box office, earning $4 million in its opening weekend. To date, Megalopolis has grossed $14.4 million at the box office. Coppola lost over $100 million on the movie. Megalopolis is not hosted on a major streaming service in the United States.
Featured cities screening Megalopolis on New Year’s Day include Brooklyn, Austin, Chicago, Los Angeles, and more. To find a showing near you, visit the Alamo Drafthouse’s website.
