Shudder has released the first official trailer for Mother of Flies, a new folk horror movie from the Adams Family and Toby Poser. Mother of Flies will release on Shudder on January 23, 2026.

“Mickey (Zelda Adams) faces a deadly diagnosis, but she isn’t ready to die yet. Heading into the woods with her father (John Adams), she seeks dark magic at the hands of mysterious recluse, Solveig (Toby Poser), who has an intimate relationship with death and roots that go deep in the land,” reads the film’s official synopsis. “For three days, Mickey endures Solveig’s extreme rituals of death magic. But every cure has its cost, and every curse is another’s gift. As buried secrets claw their way to the surface, the veil between the living and the dead begins to unravel, and Mickey finds herself facing dark truths that only the dead and the dying can know.”

What happens in the Mother of Flies trailer?

The trailer for Mother of Flies highlights the mysterious woman who is said to hold the power over death. Mickey, a woman facing an uncertain diagnosis, visits her to try and get help. There, she must endure three days in the woods, undergoing strange rituals that seem to only get more and more terrifying as the days pass.

Mother of Flies comes from the Adams Family, the duo known as Zelda and John Adams, and Toby Poser. The trio previously directed 2021’s Hellbender, another folk horror movie, which the three also starred in. Much like that film, the trio once again star in this film, alongside Lulu Adams, James Lindsay, Noble Wilson-Eiden, and Jessica Beveridge.

Mother of Flies screened at this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival, where it took home the Cheval Noir Award for Best Film, becoming the first American film to do so in its history. The movie currently holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and is described as a “modern folk-horror masterpiece” by some of its reviews.
