James Cameron Praises Godzilla Minus One Director, Pitches Collaboration Idea

James Cameron doesn’t just have praises for Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One but also wants to be part of the upcoming sequel, Godzilla Minus Zero. In a moment of lauding the director and his film, the Avatar creator offered his services as well.

James Cameron wants to be part of Godzilla Minus One sequel

James Cameron went to Japan for the first time in three years as he introduced Avatar: Fire and Ash, releasing December 19. Actor Ryubi Miyase joined him onstage, followed by a surprise appearance from Takashi Yamazaki, who came directly from shooting “a certain monster movie.” Yamazaki joked that he told his team they needed to finish by 5 p.m. so he could meet Cameron, and his staff quickly rallied to make it happen (via Japan Anime News).

Talk eventually turned to Godzilla Minus One, with Cameron revealing how much he enjoyed the film and how eagerly he is awaiting its sequel. In a moment directed at Yamazaki, Cameron said, “If you get a little behind, I can come and do some second unit.” Yamazaki laughed and quipped that such a takeover might leave him with nothing to direct.

This recent talk comes just weeks after Toho Studios officially announced Godzilla Minus One sequel during Godzilla Fest 2025 in Tokyo. The sequel brings Yamazaki back as writer, director, and VFX supervisor after Godzilla Minus One became the first film in the franchise’s 70-year history to win an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

Set for a late 2026 theatrical release, Godzilla Minus Zero’s plot details remain secret. However, the title suggests a continuation of the post-war world explored in Godzilla Minus One. Many fans believe it may move the timeline closer to Ishirō Honda’s 1954 original, tugging on themes of nuclear anxiety and national recovery.

All in all, with Cameron openly offering to pitch in, even jokingly, fans now imagine a collaboration between two visual-effects giants. For now, as fans wait for Godzilla Minus One sequel, Avatar: Fire and Ash is releasing soon in theatres.
