28 Years Later 3 Confirmed, With Cillian Murphy In Talks To Return

A major update about 28 Years Later 3 has come on the heels of the reactions around the upcoming sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. With the series once again gaining momentum, fans now have a clearer idea of what to expect next from the franchise.

What is the 28 Years Later 3 update?

Sony is reportedly going to make 28 Years Later 3 movie after the electrifying response from early screenings of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, which hits theaters on January 16, 2026. Although the studio had long held the option for a trilogy, it waited to see how the second film landed before greenlighting the final chapter. The fan reactions at the AMC Century City event, filled with “hoots and hollers,” played a major role in the decision. The biggest movement comes with the creative team and potential cast. Alex Garland, the longtime franchise writer who co-created the film series with Danny Boyle, is said to be writing the script for 28 Years Later 3. At the same time, Cillian Murphy, who reprises his original 28 Days Later character in The Bone Temple, is reportedly in talks to return once more.

Moreover, director Danny Boyle, who directed the first film in this new trilogy, has openly expressed interest in directing the third entry.

Boyle, earlier this year, talked about Nia DaCosta’s work on the second film, saying, “I remember her saying, ‘I’m not going to make a Danny Boyle movie.’ She was absolutely clear about that. And she hasn’t. She’s made her own movie, and it’s very strong.” (via The Hollywood Reporter)

For now, The Bone Temple, featuring Jack O’Connell, Ralph Fiennes, Alfie Williams, and more, picks up after the events of the previous film and continues exploring a world divided between survivors and the infected.
