Dogma 2: Ben Affleck’s Role in Sequel Teased by Kevin Smith
Could Ben Affleck return for Dogma 2? Writer-director Kevin Smith teased his plans for Affleck’s character if the sequel ever gets made.
What did Kevin Smith say about Ben Affleck in Dogma 2?
In honor of the 25th anniversary, Dogma is now available for purchase on 4K Blu-ray. Dogma stars Affleck and Matt Damon as Bartleby and Loki, two fallen angels who discover a loophole that would allow them to re-enter heaven. However, the universe will cease to exist if Bartleby and Loki succeed, so an abortion clinic employee and two prophets set out to stop it.
Now that Dogma is back in the news, the push for Dogma 2 has reignited. Smith has talked publicly about a Dogma sequel for years, but first, he wanted the home video rights to the first movie. With Dogma now available on physical media, does Smith want to make Dogma 2?
“Before I leave this best of all possible worlds, absolutely,” Smith told Comicbook.com. “But I’m the kind of guy that has to build a lot of runway for a long time. I mean, mind you, I’ve been talking about making Moose Jaws for 10 years. We’re very close, you know what I’m saying? But a Dogma follow-up has the benefit of people of brand name recognition. So it may be easier to get to than some other things. Dogma will be much easier to get financed than Moose Jaws.”
At the end of Dogma, Bartleby is sent to Hell after being killed by God. In Dogma 2, would Affleck’s character be in heaven or hell? Smith noted that he recently spoke to Affleck, and in their conversation, a Dogma sequel was mentioned.
“After Dogma came out, people would be like, ‘What happens to Bartleby and Loki at the end? And I was like, well, if you’re a touchy-feely Christian, you believe in forgiveness,” Smith explained. “But if you’re an old-school Catholic like myself, they’re burning in hell. They broke the laws, and that’s what happens. There’s punishment there. So that plays into our follow-up. Good eye, good eye.”
