Hugh Jackman Gives Great Update on Wolverine’s MCU Future

Hugh Jackman is keeping the door open to return as Wolverine, and his recent comments are a positive sign for MCU fans.

What did Hugh Jackman say about Wolverine’s MCU future?

2017’s Logan was supposed to be Jackman’s swan song as Logan/Wolverine, ending a nearly two-decade run as the character. While speaking to Cynthia Erivo for Variety and CNN’s Actors on Actors, Jackman confirmed that leaving the superhero world after Logan was the plan.

“It really felt like the end after Logan,” Jackman said. “Actually, I needed to claim it as the end, because I really believed in some things that I wanted that movie to be, and I had to fight for them. I had to say, ‘This is the last time I’m doing it.’”

However, Jackman’s plans change after witnessing Ryan Reynolds play the Merc with a Mouth.

“Then, when I saw Deadpool, I was like, ‘Oh. I see 48 Hrs. I see Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte.’ But I would shove it down,” Jackman explained. “I’ve told everyone that I’m done. I’m not one of those guys. Then I went, ‘You know what? I change my mind. It’s not that big of a deal. I’m not even gonna say I’m sorry.’ And it was so awesome.”

When Erivio asked whether his time as Wolverine had ended, Jackman said, “It doesn’t feel like the end.”

Jackman is not scheduled to appear in future MCU movies. Wolverine survives at the end of Deadpool & Wolverine, setting the stage for another outing as Logan. Looking at Marvel’s upcoming slate, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars will feature many MCU characters from the past and present, and Jackman’s Wolverine is rumored to show up in at least one of the movies, if not both.

Avengers: Doomsday opens in theaters on December 18, 2026, with Avengers: Secret Wars premiering one year later on December 17, 2027.
