FNAF Fans Wildly Disagree With Critic Reviews for Five Nights at Freddy’s 2

Fans of the horror franchise Five Nights at Freddy’s are giving movie critics a piece of their mind. Since our report yesterday, critic reviews of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, or FNAF 2, has slipped even further down on Rotten Tomatoes, with the Tomatometer score sitting at 12% based on 68 reviews, as of Friday, December 5. However, the audience reviews vastly disagree with this score and have given the sequel a Popcornmeter score of a whopping 88% based on over 500 verified ratings. That’s an incredibly wide gulf.

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 gets glowing reviews from the audience

In addition to Rotten Tomatoes, users are generally more positive about Five Night’s at Freddy’s 2 than critics have been at the time of writing.

On Metacritic, the Emma Tammi-directed film has a 6.7 out of 10 based on 68 ratings, as opposed to an average of 31 from critics based on 20 reviews. Meanwhile on IMDB, the user rating score is more tempered at a 5.9 out of 10, though 43 of the 133 user reviews have given the film a perfect 10.

One of the reasons for the disparity between critic reviews and user scores is that the film, written by series creator Scott Cawthon, contains numerous references and Easter eggs to the game franchise. As pointed out by ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim in his review for the movie, the fan service is palpable.

“Fans of the games will be overjoyed by how beautifully these animatronics are brought to life and all the visual and musical references to a series they’ve loved for years,” he writes. “Critics like me? We just want a good horror movie. And we’re not getting that here.”

Despite the low critic reviews for the film, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is projected to earn between $35 million and $40 million at the domestic box office. The film releases in theaters nationwide on December 5.
