Disney’s Live-Action Tangled Movie Suffers Huge Blow
Scarlett Johansson’s casting in The Batman 2 means she will no longer be starring in two other movies, including the live-action Tangled movie.
Johansson has been cast in a mystery role in Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2, also known as The Batman Part II. Arriving in 2027, the DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures sequel to The Batman will see Robert Pattinson reprise his role as Bruce Wayne. There’s speculation that Johansson could be playing a villainous love interest to Bruce Wayne in the film, though this has yet to be officially confirmed.
Given her commitments to The Batman 2 and Mike Flanagan’s new The Exorcist movie, both of which will be filming in 2026, Johansson has had to drop out of two other projects due to her busy schedule.
According to Jeff Sneider’s The InSneider, Johansson will no longer be playing Mother Gothel in the live-action Tangled movie. It was reported in October 2025 that she was circling the role in the remake, which is now once again in the works after development on the project was paused earlier this year. The Greatest Showman and Better Man’s Michael Gracey is directing the movie.
What other movie will Scarlett Johansson no longer be starring in besides Tangled?
Additionally, Johansson has dropped out of an indie movie called Featherwood. It was announced in 2024 that the actress would play a heroin addict who becomes an FBI informant in the true-crime thriller that was to be directed by Andrea Arnold. According to Sneider, Arnold left the project this past September, “and the chance to work with Arnold was a big reason why Johansson signed on to that project.”
Neither the live-action Tangled remake nor Leatherwood has a release date at this time. Meanwhile, The Batman Part II, which is co-written by Reeves and Mattson Tomlin, arrives in United States theaters on October 1, 2027.
